Close to the Spawnpoint theres this decent hole with some coal which leads you underground and can be used as your first mine after starting. You could alternatively fill it with lava and throw all your dirt into it, you know, like a trash can.

Some nice little surface lava-lake with some coal. You can see the trees burning if you spawn next to it ;).
