I never looked for diamond ore... I'm pretty sure there are diamonds though.

Valigar26found loads of waterfalls next to lava- good for portals- also, found gold along a cavern down one of the waterfalls- just keep exploring. All of this under the spawning island in the cave that "has a dead end"- using 1.1 too but everything is there and the same- one tree- neighboring island- all of it- enjoy

Valigar26also- if you follow the chain of islands- along the shallow water you will find several moderately sized deposits of clay- though wut you do with clay i dont know yet
