You spawn in a large jungle biome that is right across from a taiga biome. If you go through the jungle eventually you'll find a desert. I found a few lava pits, a crater, a desert temple (containing gold, bones, flesh, iron, and horse armor), and a large patch of stone with surface ores (coal and iron).
